These pictures are types of HDR (high dynamic resolution) that I have taken here around the house. You take three pictures of the same scene, one over exposed, one under, and one normal. You then put them together and you get all of the white highlights, dark shadows, and normal in the middle tones and colors. A digital camera can't pickup the same range of contrasting shades as the natural eye, so they invented this. If you want to make them more 3D and artsy then you can auto tone the HDR to get these effects. If you like messing around with cameras, then you should try this. I used a free version of photomatix (thus their name on the photos) but its free and takes literally two minutes.
